Design flaw?--2-23-2013 update edit
These are my initial thoughts when purchased 8-15-2007

You can imagine my excitement to purchase this brand--
I was soon dissappointed.
From day one this compressor had a knocking rod noise-getting worse with pressure increase-
I also noticed quite a bit of oil in my serparator

I reported trouble -and it took 1 month to get a replacement pump.In the meantime, they had my pump on the bench at the shop.

The new pump had the same knocking noise-
I was told by the service man who disassembled my original unit, there was a large space between the rods, on the crankshaft end-they had been sliding back and forth and the pistons were slapping-
after 10 hours of use-there was 1/4" of metal shavings in the oil.
This is actually made by devillbiss--you will not even talk with a Porter Cable rep.

Same as a devilbiss model with certified tank
Purchased only 3 weeks ago,works great. WEG 23amp motor and UnoAir full cast iron pump runs at 1200rpm and is a little loud but acceptable. The clear plastic oil sight glass on mine needed tightening but was easily readable. This compressor uses a single belt drive, no mag starter or finned after/inter coolers like more expensive models. There is only one air outlet at the top of the tank.
All this considered and with sale prices around $850 shipped this is a solid value for you gear-heads or the small/medium shop or garage. It appears to be well built to last a many, many years.

I have had this over 7 months. I did a lot of shop work and even restored and painted a car. Compressor is still working great with only 1 problem being the drive pulley came loose but was caught by the guard. 4/04/08 I have been using c7550 compressor for a week now. I have had no problems yet. I bought it to use with my wood sander and nailers,it has no problem keeping up,and when it was delivered it had a big scratch in the tank,but it was not deep enough to hurt anything so I kept it. If I start having problems I will let you know. 4/27/08 still no problems. 8/8/08 still no problems. Today is 01/25/09 compressor still works like new. 4/04/09 The compressor is a year old today and still no problems. 8/01/09 been using the compressor hard for the last 3 months and no problems. The day i recieved the compressor i took the plug out from under the tank and put in a ball valve and extended it out from under the tank so it is easy to drain the water, i drain it every morning. 03/20/10 the compressor is almost 2yrs old now and still not a minutes trouble yet. 11/14/10 still runs and works like it did the day i got it. It is used every day. may 28,2011 still no problems,but have just about wore...

Industrial Air IV5248069 80-Gallon Air compressor
I have puchased this commercial grade Air compressor for a 4 bay automotive repair shop. We have tested it in the shop and it is quite with out any vibrations running with 5.2 hp motor, 2-stage, Cast Iron tank, single phase 230v. Now we have installed it outside the shop and we can barely here it. I do like the output control knobs on the compressor, where we have turned it down to 150 psi (it can go up to 175 psi)and we have not yet seen a need to increase the output psi.
The dual output also helps, where we can run a quick connect for some out side the bay work. With couple of air tools running, the compressor hardly kicks in for just couple of minutes - I guess the 80 Gallon tank is helping too.
We had some tough bolts on a honda and infinity and ball joints and had to run 3/4 inch tools for a while and the compressor kicked in only for a couple minutes couple of times.
I like the output psi adjustment knob, large Dials neatly in their place. I have only used it...

Quality performer
From the time the compressor cycles on until the 80 gallon tank is once again fully charged, about one minute passes; at this rate it is going to take quite some time before replacing the break-in oil at the 100 hour mark. The compressor runs at a fairly low RPM and is thus moderately quiet and does not have that annoying sound most cheap compressors produce; in fact, it's kind of a nice rumble. Vibration is minimal, really minimal. Compressors of this type are not rated for a 100% duty cycle i.e. they are not designed to run continuously with no cycling on & off; however, we used it stripping paint at 150 psi for the better part of a day with a large external fan aiding the cooling and only tripped the motor reset once but it did have a few times to catch up while we moved ladders. This is a workhorse of a compressor. Because it is very heavy I mounted it on an industrial equipment dolly which allows for somewhat mobile use around the shop; as mobile as 700 pounds can be.
